How to Use
Baking Soda can be used on its own as directed in recipes. It is very popular as an integral ingredient in traditional soda breads and cakes. Or mix your own ‘baking powder’, the ingredient used to make Self Raising flour from Plain flour. Combine ½ tsp. of Cream of Tartar with ¼ tsp. of Baking Soda (2:1), and (optional) ¼ tsp. of corn starch. This is equivalent to 1 tsp. of Baking Powder in recipes; and can be added to 110 grams of Plain flour to make Self Raising flour. Because Baking Soda starts to react in recipes as soon as moisture is added, be sure to bake batter immediately and place in oven as quickly as possible. Baking Soda is also used as a natural household deodorant, to sprinkle on fresh stains in carpets or with vinegar as a cleaner.
